Abstract:

Wind tunnel tests, stability modal analysis and aerodynamic parameter sensibility analysis are conducted to study the lateral directional stability of HTV-2 like configuration. Wind tunnel test results show that: Compared with yaw stability, the roll is weaker in static and dynamic stability. The roll is  static unstable even in small angles; The roll test curve presents obvious non linearity, multi spectrum, periodic characteristics. Subsequent research adopts longitudinal trips to generate symmetry transition at the fore body of the model. As a result, the lateral stability of the vehicle is apparently improved. Stability modal analysis and sensibility analysis of vehicle stability to aerodynamic parameter carried out in this paper show the roll mode will divergent gradually with time and this system is sensitive to lateral aerodynamic parameters such as derivative of the yaw moment with respect to the angle of slip.
