Quantitative Evaluation on Lifetime and Reliability of a Single mode Ion Thruster LIPS 200

Abstract: To improve the readiness level of a single mode ion thruster LIPS 200, an approach to quantify the lifetime and reliability of ion thrusters is proposed. This approach involves coupling analysis of the factors of lifetime, numerical models verified by test data, and statistical methods. The wear models corresponding to the main failure modes of the thruster are refined through iteration of analysis, test, and numerical models. By applying test data and sample test to the refined wear model, accurate Weibull distribution parameters are obtained for the thruster lifetime. Thruster lifetime and reliability for certain missions can be quantified with 3 parameter Weibull model of lifetime for each failure mode.
